When it's done downloading open up the .zip and run eXeScope.exe
Next goto file >> Open >> Castle1.exe or Castle2.exe
Next you'll see a side bar with words like: + Header, Import, ect. Expand the one that says "Resource" then the one that says "Icon" From there you'll see alot of numbers, scroll down to 323.
Next you'll see there's 2 items Something that says "32*32 2 Color" and "32*32 16 Color" Click on the 16 color one and you'll see the player.
Goto File >> Import >> Youricon.ico. Make sure that your icon is in 16 colors and the file size is not greater then 776 bytes (You Sometimes can get away with it being a bit bigger) then the icon will get replaced with your custom icon.
Lastly Goto Edit >> Save Update close eXeScope and run castle of the winds. You should be playing as your own custom Charater.
Other stuff.
Now that you can do that, You could Create a Fantasy CoTw Graphic hack! and make your own style of CoTw Stuff like new monsters, and if you look around enough you might be able to find something to edit the story as well.

If you want to edit the story, Try Using a Hex-editor and finding the parts of the story.
Resource hacking the EXE is a pretty stupid way of adding icons.
The better way is to set CotW to 256 colours in compatibility mode... And yeah, we could replace the graphics, but I'm in favor of a remake, I'm still working out which language to use and such, but I promised myself to make a proper remake one day...
Right click on Castle of the Winds and select Properties, the click on the tab that says compatibilty, Check the box that says run this as a Windows 95 Program (Or 98), then click the box that says set colors to 256.
Softpedia has a Mirror for eXescope if you can't download it. I know there's more mirrors but that was the first one to pop into my head when I read this (12:58AM)
