Okay, I'm going to do a remake of CotW in my free time. I plan on redoing the graphics and certain gameplay elements, but keep storyline, item system and such the same.
I'm writing this in C++/SDL and since I'm only a novice at these languages, don't expect there to be online options.
Things that I will try to take care of:
Visible NPC's and dialogs Better graphics (I do this on a professional basis, shouldn't be too hard to get something decent) Work out certain stuff (make changes in inventory visible for example) etc...
Basically it stays the same game with better graphics...
Sorry for all the double posting, but I'm using this thread to show progress and I'm not going to keep editing the original post (call me lazy).
A preview of what he looks like when shielded. I'm not going to show freehand items, or backpacks I think.
The things you will probably see on the sprite are the different boots, the armor, the shield and the weapons. Perhaps capes and belts too. Maybe helmets.
Just so you don't have to double-post. The hero looks pretty good, but don't forget to make a female sprite as well. The hero sprite looks awesome so far. Also, try not to overdo the hero sprite. Start with the basic sprites, then when you're almost done the remake, then work on boots, etc for the sprite. I'm sure you agree with me that we don't want the sprites "cluttered". However, I do hope you can prove me wrong, as I will quite interested to see how you do. Also, should you be able to modify the alpha transparency of the sprite(s) during the game, you could add invisibility to the game, someone never done in the original game. I look forward to seeing how the game comes along.
I'm going to stick with male only and three monsters or so, until the end of the programming, then I'll add monsters and female sprite and such. I'm just coming up with the minimum sprites necessary to program the game.
The invisibility is a nice gimmick I'm going to keep in mind. The original game had a cape of invisibility that was never implemented. I'm thinking that I might include items of invisibility and invulnerability that slowly drain a stat. Mana gets drained by the cape of invisibility and HP would be drained by the invulnerability cape.
That kind of stuff is for the very end of production though, no need to get carried away. I have alot of experience with game design and I know where to place priorities...
Oh, and I found two more artists and a programmer interested to join production to help me out a little. I refuse to let them do anything substantial though, as this is going to be my personal work of pride...
I think it would be truly awesome if several ideas could be implemented.
#1 - The new game would need more levels. I mean Part 1 only had 15 levels, and Part 2 had 25. When you get right down to it, this game was so addictive that for a truly cool game, it would need a LOT of levels. What about creating a game that was open-ended (infinite levels, with stairs that go down, but not up). An open-ended, never-ending story would be cool...
#2 - Perhaps more dialog. In COTW2 there was a scene on, I think, level 4, where you can rescue a man about to be sacrificed by orcs. It's primarily a one-way conversation (he talks)... It would be cool, to have more dialogs like this, perhaps in various locations.
#3 - Just for the cheaters out there (and I am one too, occasionally )... It would be nice to have a cheat code interface, instead of having to use a hex editor, or the seperate program like Universal Game Editor.
I didn't stop creating this, but I'm currently developing a series of cell phone games first. Unfortunately this game will never make me money, while the cell phone games pay the bills.
Cypher: Yeah, good ideas, I was going to implement them all. For the initial remake I'd like to get pretty close to the original, so no infinite game initially. I'd like to get something open-ended randomized too though. Kind of a continuation. I was thinking of calling it Castle of the Winds: Geirud's Revenge. Geirud is the king of the giants in some stories, so I thought it'd be fitting he'd want revenge for the fire lord's death.
This is all future stuff though, first I'll need to get the engine up and running.
Oh, and I have more graphics ready, I'll show them when they're complete (side view and side walking is 30% done)
