If only we had the source...

Maybe this post is useless, but what would You do if we had the source of castle? Any ideas? What's missing in castle? Me, personally:

- add a cheat menu

- join castle 1 & 2

- resist acid could be permanently added to spellbook or permanently restored

- ability to edit monsters/items/prices/map?

I would have the cheating and item changing in a different tool, like ugetab's freehand modifier, but here's what I would do:

- Restore the use of the acid items and spells (Distillation of resistance to acid, the resist acid spell and adding resistance to acid to items)

- Create a use for heroism. I'm not sure what heroism does (any D&D fans here?). You've got the potion of heroism and boots of heroism...

- There's the invisibility that would be handy. Some invisible monsters would be cool too, so we have use for "see invisible"

- Some more items for certain slots. There are enough weapons, armor and shields, but there's a lack in almost all the rest. We certainly need more boots (there are some present in the code that aren't used, but I also want some iron and steel boots). More Cloaks would be cool, there are already some slots reserved in the game, which are unused. Amulets could be more versatile too... Oh and a few belts wouldn't hurt. And not to forget different bracers...

- I want some more use for the rings too. I'd love to see a multi-slot there, which allows for more then just rings, more like general jewelry (I'm not too sure what, but currently it's a rather boring slot.

- More use for wands. Right now you only use them to cash in, since they get a fair price, and mana is easy to come by, so just using the spell is easier. Perhaps a maximum of 10 spells would be cool, so you have to use wands for the other ones.

- Next point, I had a cool idea for double weapons, which dawned when I saw that you can't have shield + two handed sword. What about you can add a weapon to the free hand slot, and the damage and effects get used, but only if there's no shield present

- I might want to see some more creatures, but that's not overly important. Black Dragons would be cool. What about some more tribes, like the current game revolve around giants and dragons. There's already goblins, so I'd like to see some dwarves who are up for a fight. I'm not sure though, but I just want something else than giants and dragons (Norse mythology has something with giants though). Perhaps more ogres?

- More distinction between wizardry and fighting. I'd like to see some robes and pointy hats, and make magic less powerful, so for magic use, robes are a must. Allow staffs to be put in the item slot, with a certain use, and make some with unlimited or rechargable charges.

- Which brings me to my next point. I'd like to be able to add objects to my weapon slot, after which damage is calculated on the weight of that object. Imagine swing around a large chest, or using your shield as a weapon, allowing you to have two shields...

Well, that's about it. Nothing to major to pull off if you would have the source, though it might be a little work. As you said I'd like to merge the two games, and probably add a third part as a bonus. The third part would have three dungeons and two cities, in such a way that you have to cross one of the dungeons to get to the second town, but you can always go back to the first. On the other side of the first town would be the first little dungeon (15 levels), then there'd be the in-between dungeon, which would be for example a tunnel, a mine or a cave, with 5 levels to get to the other town, and another 20 to 25 levels downwards, which aren't required if you're just passing through. The third dungeon could have more levels, probably 50ish, and would probably be another castle, one of evil.

I'd say, we had surtur, now there's the other giants to cope. In the mountains Bergelmir perhaps (he's the leader of the stone giants if I recall well). Second leader would be Hrun, master of the ice giants. There's another figure which is kind of a hrungir figure (hill giantesque), which is Hjalmgunnar, he would be cool as a boss when you're passing through the mines and take the short way. The end boss would be Geirud, king of giants, and of course, another appearance of surtur somewhere down the final castle. Anyway, I'm rambling now, this is just the kind of stuff I'd add...

Graphics wouldn't be a problem, since my level of artistry should be beyond the game's quality. Question is if you'd make a remake of all graphics, or just make the new ones in the same style...

Huge fan here. I even created my own icons to go along with the game and used them instead of the lame icons built in. I switched to Mac now, so really, I am hoping someone would port it to Mac (or even linux/freebsd would work). I am willing to contribute as much as possible.

I see this becomeing a community supported freeware project.

I can feel another mail to Rick coming. I'm sure he'll give up and hand out the source one day...

One way to port it to all systems would be to rewrite it in java. With a game like that wouldn't take too long if you had the source...

And then a sequel of course!

Edit Button Once again has dissappeared on me...

But I wonder why Rick doesn't give out the source, I mean we all know it's messy, but there's lots of source codes that are messy.

Another thing is, does Rick even program anymore? If not, I wouldn't understand a messy source code would bother him, besides There's probably 1 person on the boards that a professional.

So Yeah, I would want to see it, it be nice to make some of the features WINXP Compaitable, like changing the player sprite without Compatibillity mode.

To me it seems you're better of rewriting the game from scratch with your changes in mind.
Doesn't look that complicated to me..

I would add:

Mods

Make your own weaponry at a smith(Including medieval weapons not in game, such as Halberds and Katanas)

Many Draughts of Gain Level

Max. Level= 80

50 new spells, including Obliterate (Destroys EVERYTHING on the screen).

Dungeon 80 floors deep.

No limits to attributes.  (Strength, etc.)

Unlimited money and carry unlimited items (I wish for this in EVERY game)

And lastly, an INCREDIBLE cache of 63000 Platinum, 1 million gold, 8 million silver, AND 26 million copper.

Oh, I forgot a sequel with even more weapons and spells.  Say, how about if WE wrote a game with ALL of our ideas in mind if we get the Source?

Unfortunately, the COTW source code (according to Mr. S himself) has long since been lost.  I'm working on a similar game, but it'll be a while before it's ready for the public yet.
