Hi, i'm Exaction. I speak french so excuse me if my english is not perfect.
I'm 17 years old and i want to be a game developper, right now, i'm learning VB6. I want my first "real" project to be a remake of castle of the winds, a kind of castle of the winds 3. I've already started it, the engine is almost complete. however, i dont want it to be open-source, but later, i'll make some editors.
I read ideas and suggestions on this forum and on others and they're all good ideas, except for the cheat menu thing. In my version of the game, there will be no cheats.
The last part of my engine(probably the hardest one), is the map system. I'm not sure if it will be few randomly-generated levels or a big world that will be always the same. One thing i'm sure of, its that i'll put skills like blacksmith.
To show you that i'm serious and i'm not dreaming, i'll soon send a very very alpha beta 0.00001 version of the game to Hrungnir.
I like the idea of another Castle of the Winds game.
I can probably help a little with importing old characters, if that's a feature you intend to include(such as, if the person is carrying the Helm of Storms, and is in the 'Dungeon Level 0' area, allow them to be imported), but if you're able to put that much effort into the game, reading the source code to my tiny VB app shouldn't pose any problems...
I do wonder if you intend to duplicate the complete abilities of the old Castle of the Winds system, or are planning to simplify the item stucture a bit. From what I've tried to do with it, I've noticed that the item structure alone is a real pain to program for in VB.
I can't offer much, but if you'd like a different pair of eyes looking through the code, I think I can help there.
Unfortunely no, so far every attempt at creating a CotW Remake has not succeeded as many of the people have either lost the source code or have gotten too tied up in life to keep us updated.
I started making a Neverwinter Nights COTW module. Seing as there both D&D based it makes life a lot easier - havnt made much more for a while but if anyone wants my module to take it further, or wants to help - then let me know :)

Thanks, its really easy to use tho honestly! Ive also made a rough trail ;)
Ill have ago again sometime at doing some more. If anybodys got NWN then ill be more than happy to pass what ive made of this module on, or even get a game going on it once theres a bit more too it!
All these remakes sound really good. Does anyone know where a completed remake can be found on the web. I'd really like to try one out.
I decided to make a remake myself without realising what I was getting into. I know nothing about making a program so I just got this gamemaker program and have been trying to figure it out in my spare time...so far i can make a little ball bounce around in a small square room...I haven't figured out how to make the stupid thing stop yet....or even start really, I just open my ball game and the little ball is already bouncing around in it's little room....I wouldn't wait around for my remake if I were you. It's gonna be a LONG wait.
Meanwhile, I can send you my ball if you want...it's purple.
Wow, I hope it works out. Like I said, I'd really be interested in checking out some of these remakes. I think I'm going to leave the programming to the programmers for the while and stick to story writting. Lol, my bouncing ball thing has graduated to a pac man type game with a girl on a treadmil that can't turn corners. Fun, fun.
