I just remembered this game from my childhood, and I was absolutely shocked to see that people still have this? Apparently old shareware did get around.
This was the first RPG I played on a PC, and for some reason it has an addiction you just can't let go of. Spending hours reloading dungeons, sleeping next to some well, selling half my inventory to buy the enchanted broad sword... all so that I can lose hard earned stats to a stupid wight.
Too bad it wasn't multiplayer... it probably would have been one of the first great MMORPGs. Its influence is undeniable and I still recognize items and spells in newer games as originating from this one (and even older games like Rogue).
But here's to you people, the fans who still download it, the ones who beg the author for the source code or make 3D conversions on new engines. I, for one, will refrain from downloading it and instead enjoy memories of a great game from a past life. Stay true to the quest for the perfect character (and someday, real vengeance for the godparents). And may your every level gained be as joyful as the last.
it's just one of the best and most addictive rpgs i've ever played.. i dont need flashy new graphics to enjoy a game, but ofcourse, the creation of a CoW follow up would be fantastic.. i spent many many hours at this game, and enjoyed every minute of it, it's a pity new young rpg fanatics wont know/play this game anymore.. we're the last men/women standing here :D
makes me kind of sad that CoW is dying.. i must be one of the newest players even, started somewhere in 2000 introducing CoW to other people makes them laugh at the graphics, but it's such a shame they'll never feel the amazing CoW feeling..
It's just so sad that the media has brainwashed people into thinking it's graphics that makes a game good. I miss the days when games didn't have to have 3D realism to be considered good.
I disagree, some sequels are good...they're just very rare. The majority of sequels that actually work are probably from movies where the writers had intended for there to be a sequel while still making the original.
As for Johan being one of the newest players, I beat you by about 5 years having only discovered the game last year on a disc with a whole lot of other low graphics games. I love it.

I can't think of any recent good sequels that are any good.
By the way, just out of curiosity what was the name of the disc and what games where on it?

Funnily enough, off the top of my head neither can I! I'm sure that there must be at least ONE, somewhere out there....then again maybe I'm just an optomist.
As for the disc which I found CoW on, funnily enough it was called Over 1000 Games and no I'm not going to list all the other games that were on it You're not missing much by me not listing them though, most of the games were pretty poor. CoW was one of the only games on there that I liked. That and another one called Spelunka which plays very similar to Mario.
